What is Child-Resistant Packaging?

Child-resistant cannabis packaging is a vital tool that helps prevent children from accessing potentially harmful substances. In 1967, Dr. Henri J. Breault, a Canadian doctor, launched the first child-resistant containers after firsthand witnessing an accidental child poisoning epidemic. He created the first child-resistant packaging that is now ubiquitous with nearly all prescription medicine vials.

Breault's ingenious invention has helped create safeguards for launching medicinal and recreational marijuana dispensaries. For example, CR packaging has been integral to allowing medical patients to access and ingest cannabis from their child-proof weed container without fear of presenting a potential hazard for children.

Congress passed the Poison Prevention Packaging Act (PPPA) in 1970 to respond to multiple cases of children ingesting household products. The PPPA requires many industries to incorporate child-resistant packaging. The PPPA ensures no child under the age of five is at risk of ingesting potentially harmful products, like prescription medications or cannabis.

While child-resistant packaging is designed to make it difficult for young children to open without adult supervision or assistance, the packaging must be easy for adult patients and seniors to open.

To test the efficacy of child-resistant containers, such as dab containers or Mylar bags, groups of 50 to 200 children, not more than 51 months old, are given ten minutes to open the child-proof packaging. For five minutes, the children try opening the CR packaging without assistance. After five minutes, the children are shown how to open the child-resistant packaging. If more than 80% of the children can open the child-proof packaging, it is considered a failed test.

For the child-proof packaging to pass the test for seniors, at least 90% of adults between fifty and seventy years old must be able to open the package within five minutes without difficulty. They must also be able to reseal it easily.
